Lloyds TSB Foundation give £15,000
An award has been made to a Levenmouth charity by Lloyds TSB Foundation. The grant of £15,000 will go towards the purchase of an apartment in Western Romania for young adults who have been raised within the Romanian orphanage system. The Children of Ineu Romanian Appeal, which has been supporting Romanian orphans since 2000, has ambitious plans to set up a number of flats for young adults, many of whom are homeless or living in squats.
The charity has already purchased and extensively renovated a family house, which is providing a home to 8 orphaned children in Ineu, a town the size of Leven.
Brought up within the poverty stricken institutions of the former Communist country,
having special needs and or learning disabilities, the result of their emotional and
social deprivation, many young adults now require support to move into independent living.
Charity Vice-Chairperson Kevin Robertson commented, 'We're delighted to receive support from Lloyds TSB. This means we can proceed with a new, exciting and much needed project. As a small locally based Scottish Charity we’re trying to punch above our weight to make a difference in Eastern Europe. As well as providing accommodation we’re working with other key partners in Romania to offer a package of support to those who will live in the new flat. Budgeting, housekeeping, being a good tenant and neighbour are all vital skills which young people will need as well as help to gain employment or access training.'
The charity until earlier this year raised much of its revenue at its shop in Buckhaven, which it was forced to close due to a proposed housing development and a lack of volunteers. A variety of fund raising efforts are ongoing to secure a further £4000 for the new project and plans are in place to operate the Thrift Shop in Leven’s Manse Place for a week beginning 27th November.
Anyone wishing to donate second hand goods, clothing or to volunteer to help in the shop for a morning or afternoon should contact Judith Croft on 01333 320883 or visit the charity’s website at www.coira.net
Over £1.2 million will be paid out to Scotland’s charities in Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland’s latest round of awards. Almost £400,000 of this will go to Scottish based charities delivering work abroad, with over £800,000 going to support charities working in local communities in Scotland.
